Naturopathic Medicine Explained
An Overview
Naturopathic medicine is a system of medicine that addresses the whole person and treats the underlying cause of health issues. Naturopathic medicine blends ancient healing practices with modern science to support and facilitate the body’s natural ability to heal.
Training
Naturopathic doctors (NDs) undergo rigorous training and attend a four-year medical program in addition to passing two extensive board examinations (NPLEX) in order to become licensed. Their schooling incorporates biomedical sciences including biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology ect in addition to numerous courses on natural therapies, clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, lab testing, and diagnostic theory. Their education focuses on understanding how the body’s systems are interconnected and how imbalances in one area can affect overall health. In addition to classroom learning, NDs undergo extensive clinical training, gaining hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of health conditions, and are trained to serve as primary care doctors, providing comprehensive, patient-centered care that addresses both acute and chronic issues.
The Principles of Naturopathic Medicine
At its core, naturopathic medicine is guided by a few key principles:
The Healing Power of Nature
Naturopathic doctors (NDs) believe that the body has an innate ability to heal itself when given the right tools and environment. Our role is to support and enhance this process.
Identify and Treat the Root Cause
Instead of masking symptoms, naturopathic medicine digs deeper with comprehensive diagnostics and seeks to address the underlying cause of health conditions, leading to long-term, sustainable health.
First, Do No Harm
NDs prioritize safe, gentle therapies and avoid treatments that may have harmful side effects whenever possible.
Doctor as Teacher
Education is a key component of naturopathic care. Empowering patients to understand their health and make informed choices is vital to long-lasting wellness.
Treat the Whole Person
Naturopathic doctors take into account the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of health. This holistic approach ensures a more comprehensive understanding of each individual. As a result, treatment plans are tailored to the unique needs of each patient, allowing for a more targeted approach.
Prevention
Naturopathic medicine emphasizes prevention, working to address risk factors and imbalances before they lead to chronic illness.
When I first learned about naturopathic medicine, I immediately resonated with its principles, and found that it was everything I believed healthcare should be: proactive, personalized, and deeply rooted in understanding each person as a whole.
Here are several ways that being a naturopathic doctor allows me to practice medicine in alignment with my core values:
Root-cause Medicine: Treats the root cause rather than masking symptoms
Patient-centered Care: Takes the time to understand the unique needs & goals of every individual, while comprehensively evaluating their physical, mental/emotional, and social health.
A Focus on Prevention: A focus on prevention is a cornerstone of naturopathic medicine, emphasizing the importance of proactive health management to avoid the onset of illness. By identifying risk factors and implementing lifestyle changes early, patients can reduce their chances of developing chronic conditions.
More Time: My visits can be anywhere from 45 minutes to 75 minutes, allowing for a thorough assessment of each individual’s health and lifestyle. I’m able to foster deeper relationships with my patients, allowing patients to feel heard and valued.
Lifestyle Medicine: My treatment addresses the things that affect the foundational elements of your daily life - I’m talking sleep, hydration, nutrition, exercise, and stress management. While I believe prescription medication can be essential for maintaining health, addressing lifestyle factors enhances quality of life and promotes longevity.
Ongoing Support: Regular visits are crucial because they ensure continuous monitoring and adjustment of treatment plans as an individual’s health evolves. Health is dynamic, and ongoing care allows for timely interventions, preventing potential issues from escalating. Consistent follow-ups encourage individuals to stay engaged in their health journey, leading to sustainable improvements in health & better outcomes.
